Who doesn’t love visiting an American drugstore? Like Boots multiplied by a thousand, they contain an enormous array of makeup and skincare items along with aisle after aisle of food, magazines, household items and of course drugs (where else in the world can you find ‘value packs’ containing 1000 paracetamol or laxatives?!) These stores are a makeup lover’s dream! Anyway, I visited a few drugstores during my few days in New York and here are some of the bits that I picked up.
Maybelline Dream Bouncy Blush in the shade ’05 Fresh Pink’– I’d heard so much hype about these blushers for ages, so I had to pick one up when I spotted it in store. The problem with US drugstores is, they rarely have testers on display so picking shades is a bit of a guessing game. I wish I’d googled shades beforehand as the one I chose is extremely sheer when swatched on the back of my hand, I’m hoping it can be built up though when I apply it to my cheeks. It really is a strange ‘bouncy’ putty-like texture, like nothing I’ve tried before. I’m looking forward to giving this a go.
Jordana Best Lash Extreme Volumising Mascara– This is a mascara that I’ve heard tons of hype about online. Seeing as it was only about $4, I thought I’d give it a go. I’m not going to open it yet as I have a million mascaras on the go, but when I eventually try it out, I’ll let you guys know how I find it!
L.A. Girl Pro Conceal High Definition Concealer in the shade ‘classic ivory’– again, this was another much hyped product, and again, one that I’ve so far only swatched on my hand. It has one of those brush style applicators where you squeeze the tube and the product feeds through the brush. I’m not usually keen on those applicators as they don’t seem very hygienic, a lot of product often gets clogged up in the brush. The formula feels thick but creamy and appears to blend seamlessly, I’m really looking forward to using this!
Milani Color Statement Lipstick in the shade ’26- Nude Crème’– Seriously, how gorgeous is the packaging on this lipstick? I’d previously owned a Milani lipstick before and absolutely loved it, so I’d planned to pick up a few more on my trip. Annoyingly, every stand that I visited was almost empty, so this was the only one that I picked up. Aside from the packaging, I love the formula, a really creamy moisturising lipstick with great lasting power. This is a gorgeous pinky caramel nude shade which is really flattering on my skin tone. Very happy with this one.
Milani Brilliant Shine Lip gloss in the shade ‘Sweet Grapefruit’– I definitely did not need another lip gloss but this one just drew me in. Its a lovely warm toned pink which has a thick but smooth texture and doesn’t feel sticky on the lips. Again, I love the packaging and the lasting power is pretty good!
Loreal Infallible Smokissime Powder Eyeliner Pen in the shade ‘black smoke’– I’m absolutely terrible at eye makeup in general, so the thought of attempting a smoky eye terrifies me. I was attracted to this as it seemed to be an easy way of doing a quick smoky eye, but honestly I think it may be a bit of a dud. The product lid is full of the powder so it covers the sponge applicator when the lid is screwed on. The tip seems really thick and the powder seems pretty flaky. I’ll give it a go, but I haven’t got high hopes for it!
Loreal Infallible Pro- Spray & Set Makeup Extender Setting Spray– The Urban Decay De Slick setting spray is one of my absolute holy grail items, so when I heard about this drugstore alternative I knew I had to try it. At $17 it is expensive for ‘drugstore’ but still a saving compared to the Urban Decay version. It definitely works well at extending the wear time of my makeup, and keeps shine at bay. I think the Urban Decay one may still win for me, but this is a good option for everyday use.
Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Circles (Brightening shade)- I’ve used this concealer before but as far as I know this brightening under eye version is only available in the States. Its so easy to apply through the built in sponge, blends in well and gives great coverage.
Milani Fierce Foil Eyeshine Palette in ‘Milan’– Wow, these shadows are intensely sparkly! They’re a cream formula that is packed with glitter. They give a pretty high impact look, perfect if you love statement eye shadow. I see online that these are priced at $9.99, however I’m positive that I was charged about $17 in CVS- very annoying!
Maybelline The Nudes Palette– This is another product priced at $9.99 online that I’m sure I paid much more for. I guess things are just overpriced in Manhattan. I picked this up for daily use instead of my high end palettes, and because I liked the shade selection. I’ve heard that this will be available in Ireland pretty soon.
Elf Contouring Blush & Bronzing Powder in the shade ‘St.. Lucia’– I really like this blush & bronze duo. The blush is shimmery peach shade, and the bronze is a pretty dark shade which also contains a slight shimmer. The compact contains a pretty decent mirror which is a huge bonus in my books!
So there you have it, a quick peek at the bits that I picked up in the drugstore. I think I was actually pretty restrained! Let me know if you’d like full reviews of any of the products mentioned. Check out part 1 of my haul here
