For years, when visiting the States, one of the highlights for me was popping into a drugstore and stocking up on Physician’s Formula products. Mascaras, blushers, bronzers, I hauled big time, threw my dollars at the cashier, and was thrilled at owning different makeup not available here in Ireland. Last year, Physician’s Formula finally hit our shores, and boy oh boy, am I glad that it did! No longer having to order online, I could now go into stores, swatch and test out the products to my hearts content, it was great. To begin with, there wasn’t great availability, but luckily, I’m seeing Physician’s Formula in more and more stores here. A while ago, I received the BB cream in 2 shades, along with the powder as a welcome gift for subscribing to Stellar magazine, and have been using them ever since. Lets see what I thought shall we?
Firstly, the Super BB Beauty Balm Cream, which I have been using in the shade Light/Medium. Firstly, I really like the packaging! The white squeezy tube is really handy for dispensing product, and is great for travel. I also like the silver holographic disco ball touch, it stands out from other products in my drawer for sure! The shade appears pretty dark at first, but it blends onto my pretty pale skin seamlessly, leaving a nice natural skin like finish. I apply it with my fingers, it’s a lightweight liquid, and it feels so smooth on the skin. It’s great for everyday use, as it looks natural, and for me, its my hero product when it comes to ‘5 minute face’ which is essentially, me trying to slap loadsa products on my mush as fast as possible before running out the door. It also has SPF 30 which is great as it eliminates the need for that extra step in my morning routine. I think this would be pretty good for sensitive skin types, it didn’t break me out, and feels moisturising on the skin. Its pretty long-lasting when I pair it with the Super BB Powder (more on that in a second…) so its perfect to pop on in the morning, and not have to worry too much about it wearing off throughout the afternoon. I really like this, it’s up there with my No7 BB cream as being one of the best I’ve tried. The only slight downside is that at €19.90, it is at the higher end of the ‘drugstore makeup’ scale, but you only need a teeny amount at a time, so a tube will go a long way!
Next up is the Physician’s Formula Super BB All-in-One Beauty Balm Powder. Again, I love the white and silver packaging. It’s really cool and unlike anything else that I own. As far as I’m aware, this is billed as a ‘powder foundation’ but personally, I find it best used as a setting powder. Combined with the Super BB Cream, it’s a match made in heaven. It adds light coverage, and blends well, leaving a somewhat airbrushed effect. I love that it controls shine, and doesn’t settle into fine lines or pores, like other powder foundations that I’ve tried in the past. For me, the shade Light/Medium is a perfect match for my skin tone, and a little goes a long way, so this is definitely one to use a light hand with.
As you can see from the photos, the packaging is a tad bulky, it opens up at the bottom to reveal a hidden mirror and brush, which is good for on the go use, but does mean the compact is bigger than most. I really like how this powder extends the life of the Super BB Cream, and I also use it with other foundations, and it gives the same great results. It’s not a powdery finish, just a natural matte, but not flat look on the skin. Again, this is at the pricier end of the ‘drugstore’ scale, at €17.90, but I’d definitely recommend it, as it is so worth the money.
