Glossybox UK May 2016 Review :)

FINALLY my Glossybox has arrived! It felt like I was waiting an absolute age for it, but today I got my grubby mitts on it, and got to see what goodies I was sent this month!

Annoyingly, Glossybox never sent me a dispatch email, and it took a lot longer to arrive to me than other Irish subscribers, so I have been seeing spoilers everywhere for the past few days which definitely spoiled the surprise for me 😦 Also when it did come, the product description card was missing, so I don’t have the full details or RRP for the products I received.

Anyway, apart from that the box was beautifully presented, I love the New York city illustrations on my box, it’s a lovely change from the pink and black box. I wish Glossybox were a bit more like Birchbox and changed their design every month! I was pleased with the bonus pack of Propercorn included in the box, I’ve just been munching away on my pack as I type up this post, and the popcorn is so tasty, and the little bag size is the perfect amount for me. Definitely impressed! This month’s box contains a nice mixture of makeup and skin care, with 2 full-sized items. Let’s take a closer look….

The first item was one I knew we would be receiving, the Revlon Ultra Volume mascara.Β A few months agoΒ subscribers were given a choice of which Revlon mascara they would like to receive from a selection of 5, and I went for the Ultra Volume one partly because I love super volumised lashes, and partly because the lid was pink! I really like the simple packaging, and I have really high hopes for this one, as other Revlon mascaras I’ve tried have been great. I already have a couple of mascaras on the go, so I’m not going to open this yet in case it dries out quickly, but I’ll give you an update once I start using it! This is a full-sized item which retails for €14.99.

The next full-sized item is the Absolute New York Velvet Lippie in the shade ‘Calypso.’ I was really excited to receive this as I’ve been wanting to try a matte lip cream for ages! The packaging is really nice and sleek, and I expected the colour to match that of the tube, but as you’ll see from the swatch below, it’s a sort of cheapy Barbie pink shade that is a bit too pale for my liking. I like the formula and lasting power, but the shade is not really my cup of tea, which is a tad disappointing. As I didn’t receive the product information sheet, I’m not sure if this is high-end or affordable, or where I can find it! I would like to try other products from the brand, hopefully in the case where I can choose a nice shade myself.

Next up is a travel size of the Hawaiian Tropic Satin Protection Sun Lotion SPF 30. I was so pleased to receive this, as we are having a bit of a mini heat wave in Ireland at the moment, and this 100ml bottle is perfect to pop in my handbag for use while I’m out and about. I have already tested this out, it is such a lovely light lotion that absorbed so quickly into my skin (I hate really white greasy sun creams that take an age to sink in) and oh my god the smell of this is just amazeballs, it has the most gorgeous intense coconut scent that just screams summer as soon as you give it a sniff. I’ve seen some other people received a dry oil which I would have loved, as I always use one on the beach, but I’m still really pleased with this. I like the size of the bottle as it would be great to take away in your hand luggage as it is 100ml. You can buy this size bottle in Boots for €8.

Another month, another moisturiser. Last month I received the Bandi Intensive Moisturising Cream, which I haven’t even had a chance to try out yet, and now here’s another one in the shape of the Bee Good Plump & Firm Moisturiser. It is a dinky little 15ml squeezy tube that will be great for travel, and the formula is made by British Bees, promising to be very kind to skin as it’s filled with natural ingredients. The formula promises to intensively hydrate, and improve visible signs of ageing while leaving skin looking luminous. I’m looking forward to trying this out!

Finally, another skin care item; the Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser. I’ve heard a lot of hype about this cleanser, and have wanted to try it for a long time, so I’m pleased with its inclusion in this month’s box. However, I’m fairly fed up with receiving teeny tiny ‘free samples’ in recent boxes. It clearly states on the back of the bottle that it’s a ‘sample- not for sale’ much like the Body Shop Oil from last month and the Olay cream from March. I wish Glossybox had put in a slightly larger version, instead of a 29ml tube I could have asked the lady in my local chemist for a sample of! It’s beginning to become a rather annoying theme with Glossybox that needs to stop.

So overall, it’s another kind of mixed bag this month. I’m delighted with the mascara and the sun lotion, they are really nice additions. The lip cream is nice, but unfortunately the shade is not for me, but others may like it. I think the moisturiser is lovely, but getting aΒ moisturiserΒ 2 months in a row is a bit boring. Also my beauty profile doesn’t state that I want ‘anti-aging’ items, I think Glossybox don’t even follow what your preferences are at all! Finally, the Cetaphil sample just bugged me. Yep, it’s a great product, but these free samples are starting to piss a lot of subscribers off. The reason why many people sign up to Glossybox is the promise of full-sized and deluxe travel size items, not free samples that you could easily find elsewhere. Birchbox is known for its tiny sizes, but not Glossybox, so I really think items like this should be added in as a bonus 6th item instead of one of the main products.Β

I will keep my subscription going, as I do love the little delivery of surprises each month, and I do discover some great brands and products through the service, but I think Glossybox need to pull up their socks a bit, and work a tad harder to suit each subscribers individual profile, and to work on including better sizes on some items.

If you’re interested in signing up to Glossybox you can do so here. You can get 30% off your first box with the code ‘TV30’ and Glossybox also have an offer at the moment where you will receive a free box when you sign up to any length subscription. So you will receive one of the previous editions from the past few months along with the current box!

ohhh I see what you mean with the different things. I have heard of Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser too, bit of a shame for the tiny sample that you got xx

It was all the samples that made me cancel my subscription with them. The only Beaty box I continued with, was my look fantastic beauty box, you get so many full sized products, and a good range of different things, not just creams! It is slightly dearer at Β£15, but it’s a better box in my opinion xx
